I just found out that today is Thursday. Who knew? Since it is a Thursday that means that the Vsco girls of the world are loading timelines up with pre-quarantine pics saying "throwback to when I could be at the beach". While I'm not the biggest fan of the thirst traps, I have to respect the effort because I too am throwing it back to the days of enjoyable Detroit Tigers baseball.
The year was 2011. My own personal baseball career was on thin ice but that didn't matter because the Detroit Tigers were murdering the AL Central. The 2011 Tigers won 95 games and were quite literally must see TV. Late July, a good Tigers team, weekend baseball and Jered Weaver vs Justin Verlander, could you ask for anything more?
This game delivered in every way possible. It was a classic pitchers duel between the two guys who ended up finishing first and second in AL Cy Young voting. (Verlander of course went 24-5 en route to winning the CY Young but this blog isn't about JV). The quality of this game however gets overshadowed by Jered Weaver being a baby back bitch. In the 3rd inning Magglio Ordonez hit a two run homer off Weaver. As it was hooking towards the foul pole Magglio stood and watched like everyone else in the ballpark. Weaver did not like this and he was even more mad when Ordonez's gimpy ass jogged the bases and shit talked him all around the bases.
Fast forward to the bottom of the 7th, Justin Verlander is working on a no hitter and Jered Weaver has retired 13 straight the Ordonez homer. With two outs in the frame, Carlos Guillen steps into the box looking to avoid his 3rd strikeout of the game vs Weaver. After falling behind in the count early, Guillen battles back and puts a fastball in the bleachers. Guillen watches the ball and jogs slowly, as a fuck you to Weaver for his earlier actions to Magglio.
Watching this video gives me chills every time. Comerica is packed, Road and Mario sound so good and the Tigers actually mean something. Jered Weaver literally was took out to the woodshed by a fat 2nd basemen who chewed half a pouch of redman every at-bat. Next batter was Alex Avila, Jered Weaver promptly threw at his head, was ejected and pouted like the baby back bitch he was. But hey if I was getting alpha'd by the entire Detroit Tigers roster I'd get pissed too.
Angels came back with some bullshit in the top of the 8th but I don't need to talk about it because Detroit won and that's all that really matters. To this day, this game is one of my favorites and makes me miss good Tigers baseball.
Fuck Covid-19.
Fuck Jered Weaver.
