Day #25 of the power ranking push. Today’s blog is brought to you by 3 morning cups of coffee in a 20-minute window, George Bush and the Miller Lite I had with my homemade burger basket. It has been over 50 days since I have watched my last live sporting event. Some days it feels like it was just yesterday that I was watching basketball and then other days it feels much longer.
I really have no clue if sports will ever come back to the old normal. For the purposes of this blog, we’re operating on the assumption that by the fall everything will be normal, and sports can go on as usual which is why I will be power ranking the power 5 athletic conferences. Conferences include the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC, and Pac 12. Let’s ride.
5. Pac 12 – Not a real shocker here, but the Pac 12 kinda sucks. Oregon football isn’t strong enough to carry this conference on their own, UCLA basketball is strugglin and Sean Miller can’t stop cheating. Yeah baseball/softball does well here but they’re not winning natty’s every year either. As a man who publicly respects women, I appreciate how much this conference puts women's sports on the map. A deduction of points was given because Utah was allowed in this conference.
4. Big 12 – I love the big 12 because they just do their own thing. Lose 4 schools to other conferences and only replace 2 of them and still call yourself the Big 12? No problem. I’m not even kidding when I say that if Kansas basketball and Oklahoma football weren’t here this conference would be a plains version of the Mountain West. The Big 12 is just a Texas being back away from cracking the top 3 in my rankings. It's also hilarious that West Virginia is in this conference.
3. SEC – The most over sensationalized conference ever. Sure, football down there is a big deal, but beyond the top 4 teams there's not much to write home about. SEC basketball is just meh. Kentucky is good perennially but is there anywhere else in the conference you hate going to play? I will give their baseball and softball teams credit for being good year in and out but that type of production is expected year-round when it's nice all the time. The hugest shout out to Pat Summit too, the Lady Vol legend helped so much with the game of women's basketball.
2. ACC – The ACC can be a sneaky good conference depending on the season or year. Right now, when you hear about the ACC, you immediately think of Clemson football and Duke basketball which is good brand association for them. My issue with ACC football is the lack of other decent teams besides Clemson. ACC baseball and softball are also solid, because ya know, warm weather. ACC basketball is good, but extremely top heavy. Overall, not a bad conference, but there are some glaring issues.
1. Big 10 – I can’t label myself a Big 10 guy and not put them at #1, that would be dumb. I will admit that Rutgers is a joke and I would trade them to the ACC for Pitt in a heartbeat. Big 10 football is a conference with legit good teams and conference field that can challenge the big guys. I know that Big 10 basketball hasn’t won a natty since 2000 (streak was ending this year btw) but find me a team that would willingly sign up to play a road game in Iowa or Michigan during the dog days of a season, you just can’t. Miss me with the baseball and softball bs because we can hold our own. Big 10 also dominates wrestling and volleyball AND has their own hockey conference. ‘nuff said for tonight.
