Power Ranking The Golf Clubs In My Golf Bag

Writer's picture: Matt Fire Matt Fire

I am a big time golf guy. During the summer I golf at least once a week (s/o to the Ridgeview Men's league that golfs at Candlestone now) and I usually don't say no to a weekend round of golf. I want to get ahead of any slander that comes in the direction of my golf game, I am very aware that my skills would be considered below average. If I am absolutely stripping the golf ball I might have a handicap of 10 but that's only a 2 wee window every summer.

As I sit in quarantine unable to golf, I've chipped some golf balls in the back yard and washed my clubs 3 times now. Yesterday as I sat and watched Tiger's epic 2019 Masters win I thought about a few things. The first being that I really miss the Masters and the second being that I suck at golf. Therefore I am going to power rank every golf club in my bag based on my ability/confidence to hit the said club.

*I don't care if I have fore clubs than the tour allows in the bag for events. I play by my own rules*

Clubs Available In My Bag

Ping k15 Driver

Tour Edge 3 Wood (my brothers)

Tour Edge 5 Wood (also my brothers)

TaylorMade Burner Rescue 3 Hybrid

King Cobra II Forged Iron Set - 3 iron, 4 iron, 5 iron, 6 iron, 7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron

Wilson Pitching Wedge

Women's Sand Wedge from my Grandma Marilyn

Cobra m/56 degree wedge

Old TaylorMade putter from my neighbor

15. Tour Edge 3 Wood- Big s/o to my little brother Drew for letting me stick this club in my bag. Not that I hit it well or very often, but it does helps me look the part as a golfer. Only time that I really hit the 3 wood is if it's a crazy long par 5 or if I hit a really bad tee shot and need to cover some ground.

14. Tour Edge 5 Wood- Another club that's just there so it doesn't get fined. I think I would be more likely to use the 5 wood over the 3 wood but that's not saying a lot. Perhaps when quarantine is over I'll make an effort to get better with these kind of clubs. For the time being these loaners will work because I am broke and these are free to use.

13. 3 iron- Not many golfers carry irons this low any more and frankly, I don't really know why I do. The new hybrids that are produced are more or less better versions of these clubs. I really only carry the 3 iron because when you end up in trees as often as I do, it's a great tool to get back to the fairway with.

12. 6 iron- For me this is a weird club because sometimes it's good for almost 180 yards and then other days only 150 yards. The inconsistency is probably my own fault but the blame goes to the 6 iron. I do think that it serves a purpose in the bag for a round of golf.

11. 4 iron- If my 4 iron reads this and feels a little disrespected, that's fine by me. Iron sharpens iron anyway. The 4 iron is another club that use to be god in the game of golf but had its shine taken during the hybrid renaissance. Like the 3 iron this club is great for getting back on the fairway from the woods. Every now and then I can accidentally hit a good stinger with it.

10. 5 iron- This guy usually becomes the plan B if my driver becomes a huge liability. Also commonly used on some of those dumbass par 3s that are long. I'm not the greatest with this guy, but we do have our moments. I think we all can agree that nothing beats hitting a flush 5 iron down the fairway.

9. Ping K15 Driver- Big time love-hate relationship here. Nothing beats being able to get out the big puppy and really let the dawgs bark. My issue being that I'm never able to consistently hit it straight or far. I have been told that I have a nice swing tempo but that means nothing when if I'm playing from the rough. Although I can mess around and hit 100% fairways at 250 a drive for a round every now and then.

8. Old TaylorMade putter from my neighbor- Very long title for a golf club that I have no clue what year it is from. Anyway it seems like a good enough putter for me. Having a $5,000 putter isn't going to make me read greens better anyway. My putter has a good enough feel and whatnot. Just too many 3 putts for it to be any higher.

7. 8 iron- Another club that can be up and down and I really hope that my 8 iron takes no offense to this. In all honesty the 8 might be one of the more slept on clubs in my bag. It has great range in the sense that I can get varying range based on the swing speed. Only thing we need to hammer down is getting balls to land clean on the green.

6. Cobra m/56 degree wedge- In the 2 rounds of golf that I played pre-quarantine, I was lights out with this club. It's cool to be 60 yards in and kinda be able to gracefully land a ball near the pin. Would be higher if it weren't for the risk of blading shots across the green with this club. Definitely need to keep the head down when you swing.

5. 9 iron- Officially in the top 5 with the 9 iron. When I was younger, this was a heavily utilized club. But now as I am a little stronger I don't need it as much. Still has a decent ability to land balls on the green with some forgiveness. Is really good off the tee for par 3s too.

4. Wilson Pitching Wedge- For what it's worth, I use to have a Cobra PW that matched my iron set but I have no clue what happened to it. These days I play the old Wilson PW that I found in my garage. This guy is sweet, chips fine, lands soft from far out and even has a hockey tape grip.

3. 7 iron- The 7 iron is a super slept on golf club and it can do so much of the average golfer. I like hitting it from fairways or par 3 tee boxes because it carries pretty well. I love to use it for low shots near a tree line when I still need to cover some distance as well as chipping near the green. Let's say you are on the fringe with lots of real estate to cover, I don't always like to putt super far. Well the 7 iron can alleviate that but I would practice this a few times first.

2. TaylorMade Burner Rescue 3 Hybrid- Bought this bad guy for $20 from my guy Chris Kmeick who bought it off of Mitch O'Neill. I am excited to see who I am going to sell it to. Anyway, I love this club. Even when I don't hit it super well, it ends up being a playable ball. It also is one of those clubs that makes a cool noise when you hit it flush. This club has got me out of some bad spots so there for I am very confident, probably to a fault.

1. Women's Sand Wedge from my Grandma Marilyn- After my grandma passedI threw this club in my bag because I didn't have my own and thought it was cool to have hers. Last summer was the first time I really started hitting this club from fairways and it was a game changer. The ball sits just like it's supposed to and actually can get some pretty solid distance. I have a good feel chipping with it too. As long as I'm nit using it from actual sand, I love this club.
