Day #6 of power rankings, and I decided to bring one out from the archives. I'm a big rec specs guy, ever since my freshman year of high school I've been all in on the lifestyle, never looked back. I want you to understand that I don't care about the statistical outputs of these athletes, but rather how they looked and how they represented the rec specs nation.
Honorable Mention- Unfortunately I just don't have the resume to make the list of the top rec spec wearers. However, I always have been and always will be an ambassador to the rec specs nation. And the same goes for B Money he fucks with the specs as much as I do. Gordon from the movie Dodgeball was just another average man that was given new life thanks to rec specs. We all are alike and owe a lot to the guys that are listed below.
7. Jose Valverde- Valverde was better known as 'Papa Grande' or better yet, the journey man closer who was one of the most inconsistent relievers in baseball. When Papa Grande was pitching well he was nearly lights out, but most of the time he was throwing batting practice to guys. Valverde had a stint with Detroit and caused me lots of personal stress so therefore he comes in at the bottom of this list.
6. Kirk Hinrich- Hinrich was a three point specialist who played all over the NBA, but made a name for himself playing for the Chicago Bulls and wearing rec specs. I use to love playing with Kirk on the old NBA Live video games so it was easy to put him on the list.
5. Rodrigo Blankenship- Rodrigo currently is a kicker for the Georgia Bulldogs football team and flexes on everyone in college football. The rec specs in a football helmet is a great look and you mix in a mustache? Now we're talking a top 5 possible look. He also gets bonus points for getting a pic with Quavo and having a last name like Blankenship, but Georgia thinking that they deserved to be in the College Football Playoff drops him in my rankings.
4. Horace Grant- Horace was an absolute wagon in the NBA while playing for the Bulls, Magic and Lakers. While he did win 4 NBA Championships and was a premier rebounder and defender, some say that he is better known for wearing the specs. In fact, Grant was such a specs ambassador that he kept wearing his rec specs after he had lasik surgery to fix his eyesight. I honestly feel bad not ranking him higher, but that's the way she goes sometimes.
3. Kurt Rambis- I get that Rambis isn't technically wearing rec specs but his look is just too iconic not to have him on the list. Rambis was the grittiest member of the showtime Lakers and embraced his role with the team. I also slotted him this high because I always get called Rambis at open gyms if nobody knows my name.
2. Amar'e Stoudemire- Amar'e was an absolute stud when he played for the Phoenix Suns and that was also when an unfortunate eye injury forced him to put on the specs for good. Stoudemire is one of the few players on this list that I was actually able to see play. Amar'e made specs cool again and balled out doing so and I literally just found out that he still plays on a team in Jerusalem, so go off you rec spec king.
1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar- Kareem is the OG rec specs guy, he laid the foundation for bums like me to wear the specs but also stars like Stoudemire to embrace the look. Kareem also complimented his specs with a damn good sky hook that I don't think anyone in today's NBA could guard. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the reason we wear specs he is why we respect the specs.
I am well aware that I have omitted Eric Dickerson (and many others) and he honestly probably deserves to be on the list but I just don't care as much about old time football guys so he didn't make the list. I still appreciate him for wearing the specs and being good at football. Just remember to respect the specs.
